Location

Shenzhen is a beautiful seaside city. It is strategically located, and is the only city in the mainland bordering Hong Kong. The total area of the city is 1948.69 square kilometers, including 391.71 square kilometers for the Special Economic Zone. Shenzhen is bordered by Dapeng Bay to the east, the Pearl River Estuary to the west, Hong Kong to the south, and Dongguan and Huizhou to the north. The topography is high in the southeast and low in the northwest, mostly low hilly land, with gentle terraces between, and coastal plains along the western coast. The main river Shenzhen River is 35 kilometers long. The average annual rainfall is 1933mm. Mineral resources have been found in 23 species, 81 mineral sites, some of which have been proven to have a certain amount of industrial reserves. Shenzhen has a subtropical maritime climate, with an average annual temperature of 22.4°C. All year round, the grass is green and flowers are in full bloom.

Shenzhen originally had six county-level incorporated districts, namely Luohu, Futian, Nanshan and Yantian districts within the SAR and Bao'an and Longgang districts outside the SAR, with the municipal government in Futian District. Shenzhen now has 6 administrative districts and 4 new districts: Futian District, Luohu District, Nanshan District, Yantian District, Baoan District, Longgang District, Guangming New District, Pingshan New District, Longhua New District and Dapeng New District.

Since July 1, 2010, the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone has been extended to the whole city. The SAR has completed the "two transformations" from rural to urban and from farmer to resident in 1992. Shenzhen is a city of immigrants, with a resident population of 10,467,400 as of the end of 2011, of which 2,679,000 are household residents. The city flower of Shenzhen is the cambium, and the city trees of Shenzhen are the lychee and mangrove.
